Credit File

A consumer credit file documents an individual's credit profile and history. Creditors and lenders view a person's credit file and score in order to evaluate the person's financial state of health and his credit worthiness. Interest rates for loans are often determined using consumer credit files and scores.

Credit files are maintained by credit bureaus. There are three major ones in the United States. They are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Equifax is the largest of the three credit bureaus. Consumers can request their credit files and credit scores from each of the three bureaus. Typically a fee is charged. However, a quick search on the Internet will display many free promotional offers for credit files.

CreditScoreProtect.com and the featured sponsors/paid ads on this website are NOT affiliated to the annual free credit report program. According to FTC(via ftc.gov), everyone has the right to receive a free copy of their credit report once every year from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies. To get your free annual report with respect to this law, you need to visit www.annualcreditreport.com.
